Classical Unities
The classical
unities, Aristotelian unities, or three
unities are rules for drama derived from a passage in Aristotle's Poetics.
In their neoclassical form they are as follows:
1.unity
of action: a play should have one action that it follows, with minimal
subplots.
2.unity
of time: the action in a play should occur over a period of no more than 24
hours.
3.unity
of place: a play should exist in a single physical space and should not attempt
to compress geography, nor should the stage represent more than one place.
Sphinx
A sphinx (Greek: Σφίγξ [sfiŋks], Boeotian: Φίξ ['fi(:)ks], plural sphinges) is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion.
Age of Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was
an intellectual movement which dominated the world of
ideas in Europe in the 18th century. The Enlightenment included a range
of ideas centered on reason as the primary source of authority and legitimacy,
and came to advance ideals like liberty, progress, tolerance, fraternity, constitutional
government, and separation of church and state. In France, the central
doctrines of les Lumières were individual liberty and religious
tolerance in opposition to an absolute monarchy and the fixed dogmas
of the Roman Catholic Church. The Enlightenment was marked by an emphasis
on the scientific method and reductionism along with
increased questioning of religious orthodoxy – an attitude captured by the
phrase Sapere aude, "Dare to know".
What Child is This?
"What
Child Is This?" is a Christmas carol whose
lyrics were written by William Chatterton Dix, in 1865. At the time of
composing the carol, Dix worked as an insurance company manager and had been
struck by a severe illness. While recovering, he underwent a spiritual
renewal that led him to write several hymns, including lyrics to this
carol that was subsequently set to the tune of "Greensleeves", a
traditional English folk song. Although it was written in Great Britain,
the carol is more popular in the United States than in its country of origin
today.
Lyric:
What child is this, who, laid to rest,
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spears shall pierce him through,
the cross he bore for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
the Babe, the Son of Mary.
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.
Nails, spears shall pierce him through,
the cross he bore for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
the Babe, the Son of Mary.
So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh,
Come, peasant, king, to own him.
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The babe, the Son of Mary.
Come, peasant, king, to own him.
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone him.
Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The babe, the Son of Mary.
This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The babe, the son of Mary.
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
It's the most wonderful
time of the year
With the kids jingle belling
And everyone telling you "Be of good cheer"
It's the most wonderful time of the year
It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
It's the hap- happiest season of all
There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And caroling out in the snow
There'll be scary ghost stories
And tales of the glories of
Christmases long, long ago
It's the most wonderful time of the year
There'll be much mistletoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When love ones are near
It's the most wonderful time of the year
There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
